Project: I Made a Dog Man T-Shirt for my Son!

Hello, all!
Today I want to share my adventures into t-shirt making. I was checking my son’s closet the other day and I found a plain black t-shirt we had bought for him for one of his school’s music sharing perfomances last year. It still fits and I couldn’t see much use to having it hanging forever, so I decided to transform it into something useful.
My son has recently found a love for reading. He has really grown in his reading skills this past year (he’s in first grade) and his favorite author of all time is Dav Pilkey (really famous author of Captain Underpants. In case you aren’t familiar with him, the Captain Underpants movie is coming out June 2nd).
When the Fall Book Fair came to his school, he got Dav Pilkey’s latest book: Dog Man! Then, he used his own hard-earned money to buy Dog Man 2. He loves it! He carries the book wherever he goes, which is why I thought making him a Dog Man t-shirt would be the best thing to do.
And so I did.

He decided he wanted the Dog Man from the second book cover:

Once I knew what I would be working with I gathered my supplies, which consisted on 3D paint (fabric paint), a piece of carton I cut from a box, a yellow or white wood pencil and the shirt)

The first thing I did, was use a yellow wood pencil to trace the character on the shirt.
Then, I used the paint to outline the outside first.

After 4 hours and once the paint was dry, I continued outlining the rest:
Once that was done, I let it dry for another 4 hours. The next thing to do was color the inside of the character. For that, I used a small number 2 brush I already owned. I used a paper plate to hold the paint and did one coat of the whole thing. As you can see, most of the paint was absorbed by the fabric, so it was clear it would need another coat:
Here’s the shirt with 2 coats of paint:
Last thing I did was draw the eyes and the small lines that hold the head with the body together and I was done! My son loved it and is happy because he’s the only kid in school with a Dog Man shirt!
cheers!
