Graphic Novel Review: Courtney Crumrin Vol 1. The Night Things
November 2, 2017
I read the first volume of a one, Courtney Crumrin, only because my ten year old daughter put it in front of me and said, “Mom, you have to read this, you’d like this.” I looked at the book, it was a graphic novel, it was dark looking and I had no choice but to agree to read it.
It was not bad. The story is mostly about magic (as in warlocks and witches) and monsters that live in the shadows. There are some things I didn’t like for a young ten year old to be reading. For example, the parents are idiots. This is not only my opinion, it is said they are dumb several times during the story. They are shallow and don’t really care about their children. The people who live in the town are apparently rich, only care about appearances and again, don’t really care about their children. The children grow up to be vain and bullies. What in the world? The parents don’t care about their children so much that when a baby is replaced by a baby-looking monster, they don’t even notice.
I mean, I understand that it’s a graphic novel, but if you’re going to market it to children, I wouldn’t be taking these serious issues to the stories. Our society has problems enough with children not minding authority. Why add to the fire.
Regardless, the art and the characters were of my liking as an adult, but I would not shove this graphic novel in my children’s faces. It is in the kids’ section in our library, so beware.
I still gave it 4 stars because the quality of the graphic novel in itself was good, in my opinion. So, there it is.
cheers!
