Genre Search: Urban Fantasy – God Touched (The Demon Accords #1)
January 11, 2020
I got this book on Audible as a part of my search to find urban fantasy books that are like my own series of books. I think this is the closest to my books that I have found.
The only thing I regret is the fact I listened to it on Audible. I didn’t like the narrator. Everything he read the dialogue for our main character, he seemed to end all of his dialogue in the form of a question. That got annoying, fast. It made me think about the future when I hire a narrator to read my books into audiobooks. There’s so much to think about. Also, I imagine the good narrators must be expensive. Oh well, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
With that out of the way, let’s talk about God Touched, by John Conroe.
The first think I will say about this book is that it has vampires on it who aren’t mindless killing beasts. I like that. I liked that one of them was a main character, too. I wish we could have gotten more into her thoughts, her motivations, her confusion, but… I’ll take what Mr. Conroe gave me.
In my books, the vampire are the protagonists, and what I enjoy the most is how they battle inside with having human souls while they live in a vampire body.
The main character in the Demon Accords is human. He’s not an ordinary human, and he becomes even less so as the book progresses, but he’s still overall just a regular guy. With the ability to sense auras and vanish demons, he isn’t just a man, either. He often has inner monologues about what it’s like being him. I liked that.
The plot wasn’t well defined, and the story was slow at times. There were a lot of mundane situations with these supernatural characters, and I like that. My books are like that, too. It was refreshing to see a successful author writing about these mundane situations and still be successful. In my books, there’s a lot of that.
There were a few action moments, but not many, and the problem/solution came late and ended soon. It was more like an introduction to the world just like my book The Recruit is an introduction to my world. In fact, I can almost guarantee that if you like Demon Accords, then you will love The North American Vampire Secret Agency.
Overall, I enjoyed the story, although I did find it a bit slow in part, hated the narrator, and I thought more could have happened with the problem/solution.
Thanks for reading.
Cheers!
