Comic Book Review: Monstress
February 23, 2017
We were walking around Barnes and Noble while trying to complete the Harry Potter Scavenger Hunt on the day Cursed Child was released when I stopped in front of a rack filled with comic books featuring women as the main character.
The art was the first thing that attracted me to this comic book (graphic novel). The artist is Sana Takeda, who draws almost like manda, and the writer Marjorie Liu. Although the characters are beautifully drawn, the fact that the entire comic book is basically brown got a little tiresome after a while. Also, the plot was confusing at first, and since I was learning the mythology through dialogue (very complicated mythology), I felt a little frustrated at first.
Unfortunately, it did not catch my attention enough after the first compilation to keep reading it, but it wasn’t awful either. Perhaps with a little patience I would have learned to like it.
I always respect people who take their stories and get them out into the world and I’m glad there’s people for every genre. I just wasn’t a real fan of Monstress.
cheers!
