Visiting New York: Broadway – School of Rock
September 28, 2017
We visited New York City in July 2017. We went there with friends and stayed in a house we rented near Central Park. This is the first time the kids were ever in New York, and so our schedule included the most popular attractions:
1. The Metropolitan Museum of Art
2. The Statue of Liberty
3. The American Museum of Natural History
4. The Guggenheim Museum
5. Intrepid Air, Sea and Space Museum
6. The Empire State Building
7. Broadway: School of Rock
Have you watched the original School of Rock movie starring Jack Black? I have, the kids hadn’t. They had a very limited idea of what they were there to see, and boy were they pleasantly surprised! The score is by Andrew Lloyd Webber (not my husband’s favorite) and he outdid himself. The actor who plays the Jack Black role from the movie was very much like Jack Black, only he sang. The kids were great and they played their instruments live every time! We love that. My daughter still reminds me of this fact whenever we play the soundtrack in the car.
The musical is recommended for ages 8 and older and anyone under 4 years of age is not permitted inside. There is some language in the play and of course the situation where a teacher doesn’t teach and nothing really happens to him – not the best role model – but apart from that the music is amazing and the dialogue is quick and funny.
My kids really enjoyed this play. They had seen Wicked prior to this one and I don’t think they enjoyed it as much. They also saw it in a theater back home and here the theaters are bigger and we were on the back and we couldn’t see the actors faces clearly, while in New York the theaters are smaller so no matter where you sit you can see pretty well.
I definitely recommend this play. Definitely five stars in my book.
cheers!
