Series Review: American Gods Season 1
August 19, 2017
I read the book American Gods by Neil Gaiman a while back. I read it because I like Neil Gaiman as the writer of the comic book Sandman. Those comic books are just amazing (and for adults). They narrate the adventures of Dream, the lord of dreams, of the Endless. I definitely recommend those:
I had read a few books by Neil Gaiman and that’s how I came across American Gods. I confess it wasn’t the best book I ever read, not by a long shot. It did have an interesting premise, and like most Neil Gaiman books, weird things happened, but there was something missing in the book for me. I was very close to just quitting reading it altogether. I didn’t. I finished it. It wasn’t great, but at the end I felt like the story had been told and it had been told well.
Then they announced the series on Starz with wonderful reviews. We had to watch it.
The series is pretty amazing. It is also for mature audiences. Since I knew the book, some story points were no mystery to me even when they were making them mysteries. While I don’t remember details from the book, I could tell that they were pretty much trying to be faithful to the plot. Most things I remembered, some I didn’t, but I still enjoyed season 1 very much.
Perhaps the only thing I would change is the music. The music can be a little dull sometimes, but the acting and the story and the visuals and everything else is amazing.
I do recommend it.
cheers!
