Movie Review: Valerian and the City of aThousand Planets

We saw Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets on Hulu and decided to watch it. We had been wanting to see it with the kids since it played at the theater, but we heard negative reviews, one thing led to another and we didn’t.
Well, I can tell you the kids loved it.
It is visually fascinating. I, personally, would have cast someone different as Valerian, but that’s just me. I don’t think Dane DeHaan did a good job with this character. On the contrary, I really liked Cara Delevinge as Laureline and loved, loved Rihanna’s character, Bubble.
The movie was a little slow, but had a solid plot and some of the ideas shown to represent how the future will look like were amazing. I especially liked the other dimensional market, so cool! I also really enjoyed the Pearls and their peaceful nature. I loved watching them in every way.
I did not much understand why the humans didn’t really work together with other alien races. This was probably my greatest complaint. It was as if they were too important to even mix with them. Over all, each species worked independently from the rest even if they all lived in the same place (an enormous space station: Alpha).
I don’t think it was a bad movie, perhaps it was the bad acting that made me feel like something was off (mainly from Valerian) and how sometimes it felt a little slow. Otherwise, it was stunning to watch.
cheers!
