Movie Review #TBT: The Abyss

Let me start off by saying that I think the Abyss is one of the best movies ever made. It has so many feels, it has action, it has a great unexpected ending and a wonderful soundtrack (which I’m humming in my head as I write).
Unfortunately, it was not a movie for children. My kids really enjoyed Avatar and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, so I thought they would enjoy the Abyss. Boy, was I wrong.
The movie starts with a submarine that hits a rock – after an unexplained event – and sinks. That means: everyone dies. Just like that, my kids began to be stressed about the characters dying. For no apparent good reason.
We still continued watching, but by the time the crew actually enters the submarine and we see the crew dead, we began to feel like this movie wasn’t for them. Then came the scene where the crew gets dragged by the crane. That was it. Too much. The kids didn’t want to see anymore. It was too stressful for them to think that at any moment, for any thing, the characters could die. They couldn’t take it.
So we stopped the movie right there. Maybe when they are teenagers we’ll give it another try. I remember loving this movie so very much, but I saw it years ago and since then I forgot all these things that happen that the kids might not be ready for.
cheers

Common Sense Media recommends this movie for children 15 and up.
