Movie Review: Ready Player One

I got to read Ready Player One back in 2013. I LOVED it. I thought it was the best thing I have ever read. I knew it wasn’t for everybody, but it sure was for me! I’m a geek and most everything the book talks about, videogames, movies, anime, I’ve either played, seen or heard about. It was, like some reviewers say, a nerd dream. I am one of those nerds.
Then, they announced the movie coming out and I could not contain my excitement. Not only was it coming out, it was being directer by Steven Spielberg! Seriously, could it get better than that?
At the same time that news and rumors started to appear, I found out that something had happened to the book between its publication date and the movie. Apparently, there were a lot of haters. For some reason there were a lot of people who thought the writing wasn’t good, nor the story.
Of course, the author’s second book, Armada, came out and even when to me it wasn’t as good as the first one, it wasn’t all that bad either. But this prompted a lot of haters to change their original review of Ready Player One. I don’t know how to explain it. We live in a crazy world and suddenly people thought this book was so important and relevant to their lives they needed to change a review.
So, anyway…
The movie came out and we went to see it. I read the book back in 2013 and I didn’t remember some parts. I know they had to change the storyline because of its transition into a movie and I was more than okay by it.
We took the kids and we had an amazing time. Just trying to identify all the cameos in the movie was a thrill! I personally enjoyed the bit about The Shinning’s Outlook Hotel, since I’ve read the book and watched Jack Nicholson’s movie. But, there was so much more!
I need to watch it again only to be able to catch what I missed.
The main storyline is the same. The characters have to find the three keys that will give them control of the Oasis, a huge virtual world everybody spends most of their time in because real life sucks. Simple enough, right?
I don’t know, to me it was perfect and the characters were perfectly cast.
If you ask me, it’s a five star movie… of course, you’ll enjoy it more if you’re a geek/nerd like me!
cheers!
