Movie Review: Ghost in the Shell
April 2, 2017
I barely remember watching the original anime “Ghost in the Shell”. I remember back then – about 15 years ago – it was weird and complicated. I remember when the movie ended I turned to look at my husband and asked – what just happened?
Honestly, watching the new movie with Scarlett Johansson was like watching a totally new sci-fi film. Really. I guess I’m not that hard core.
I vaguely remember the original, but I loved the new one.
I don’t really care much about the ethnicity of the characters. I mean, as long as they make me believe there are there and the characters become real, I’m ok with it. Although, I can’t say that I don’t care at all… for example, if they ever cast a Jean Grey who isn’t red head, I guess I would be disappointed. I would still go watch the movie, tho!
This new live action Ghost in the Shell was amazing! The entire setting was almost taken from Bladerunner. I would not want to live in a world like that, where you are basically raped by technology in more ways than one, but the idea of it and the execution were great.
Scarlett Johansson did a good job, too, I think. She sometimes did look like she was living in a “shell”. The supporting cast were also spot on. It was a pleasure to watch this movie.
Now, the plot made total sense to me. Except… well, technology can’t just stop evolving just because some people say it will stop. Like nature, it will find a way.
I totally recommend this movie. It was a good dose of science fiction done the right way!
cheers!
