Movie Review: Coco

As a Mexican, I was a little reluctant to go see “Coco”. As it often happens in movies, I feared the Spanish would come from an American speaking Spanish and that the “customs” about the Day of the Dead would be totally wrong (I admit I don’t celebrate Día de los Muertos myself, but I have at some point).
I was completely wrong.
It was a beautiful movie. The Spanish spoken was not only real, it was Mexican, and even the colloquialisms were there – my favorite being: no manches. Glorious!
The movie made me cry three times, too, and it all made perfect sense. The kids enjoyed it, as well. We got to see it while visiting family during Thanksgiving Break, and it made all the more sense to  them to be in the theater with their grandparents, aunts and uncles and primos.
I am so glad Disney got it right with this movie. I’m so glad they showed that Mexicans are real people, too. Regular people, people with families and dreams and jobs and love in their hearts; and just like in every culture, some bad seeds.
If you haven’t watched this movie yet, I recommend you do. You won’t regret it.
cheers!

Common Sense Media recommends this movie for children 7 and up.
