Learning Web Development: Trying Udemy
April 24, 2017
Well, I have finally quit Coursera.
The course I was taking changed in a different direction. The instructor suddenly changed to Bootstrap to do CSS and started going too fast. Then, it would only be a week of JavaScript left in the curriculum, which made me think it would not be covered in the detail and pace I needed.
So, I started looking around for a Beginners Javascript course.
I did several searches online and came up with two finalists. Remember, I don’t have a lot of budget yet.
My first choice was codeschool.com. It is a paying website, but it looked good. It is $29 a month (cancel when you want) or $228 a year ($19 a month). The free courses weren’t what I wanted, but once I get a free online beginner’s Javascript course I am definitely going to pay for codeschool.com.
My second choice was udemy.com. Here I bought two courses for $10.
- Javascript – From Beginner to Pro! – Build Real World JS apps
- The Web Development Bootcamp
Since I learned quite a bit from the coursera course, I decided to start with Javascript. So far, I am very satisfied with this course. I have learned a lot and it has quite a bit of practice exercises embedded into the course. It’s been pretty awesome. I’m still learning the basics, but feel like I’m getting the hang of it. Pretty good intro course, I think, although I’m only about 20% into the course right now.
After I’m done with this course, I will go through the Web Development Bootcamp before starting on codeschool.com.
Now, when I told my brother about my Udemy courses he was disappointed because he says Udemy has had some controversies in the past. He had me google “Udemy Controversies”. I did. About a year and a half ago (2015) they stole some material, apparently. There were some issues. It is the only thing I could find. Overall, I have heard other users talk about Udemy in a positive light.
I thought I would mention that.
Whatever the case I have bought the courses and I will complete them.
I am enojoying Javascript. I like that my brain is moving. Although, I really haven’t started the complexity of the language.
We’ll see.
cheers!
