Graphic Novel Review: Sandman Vol. 1 – Preludes and Nocturnes

I remember one of my friends introduced me to The Sandman in college. Well, it was more like she introduced me to a different kind of comic book and she began with The Sandman. We became friends because we liked comic books and anime and the like. I would tell her about the X-Men and she would tell me about more adult comic books. Like with a lot of people, college was an age of discovery, but in my world, I discovered adult books and comic books. I began reading Anne Rice and was introduced to Neil Gaiman.

The first comic book she gave me to read was the one about Dead: The High Cost of Living (which is currently lent to one of my friends:

After that, I remember reading an issue or two of The Sandman, and that was about it.
Then, after college, I started reading Neil Gaiman’s novels. I knew who he was and I knew he was cool and even when his writing was weird, I still liked it. It was different. But, not The Sandman.
It wasn’t until I was in my thirties that I bought the first volume of The Sandman and read it… and then I forgot about it again. I kept reading Neil Gaiman’s novels, just not the comic book he became famous for.
Until one day a few weeks ago, when I was looking for something to read in my husband’s study where I saw it again. I own volumes one to three, but have only read the first. I decided to read them all.
So, it begins. I read the first one again, Preludes and Nocturnes.
It begins with Dream, one of the Endless, as he is kidnapped and held prisoner by a man who wants to trap Death (Dream’s sister). Dream waits for decades until he finds a way to escape and then he, weakened, needs to find his way back to his power and his kingdom.

Preludes and Nocturnes is the introduction to Dream, the protagonist, The Sandman, and his return to power.
I wonder what other adventures he’s going to find next.
I am finally going to find out!
cheers!
