Graphic Novel Review: Captain Marvel Vol. 1
October 17, 2017
Captain Marvel Vol. 1 includes issues #1 to 11 of the Captain Marvel comic book.
I know this is a reboot of the original character and through media I’ve heard all these great things about Captain Marvel; that and, the movie is in development. So, when I saw this graphic novel at the library I got really excited.
I had no reason to get excited.
Or maybe I didn’t enjoy it as much because I had these preset great expectations, I don’t know.
Also, in a way I hoped to get an origin story, but that wasn’t included in issues #1 to 11, so I missed that, too. There’s of course Wikipedia and I had to go and read the origin story to see if that made the character more meaningful to me.
But, no. Carol Danvers is, in my opinion, not very interesting at all. She’s a woman who is accomplished and great at what she does, but I don’t see that she has anything that would make her like me, maybe we’re too different. The character starts the graphic novel by thinking Earth is just not good enough for her (it’s boring) and so she decides to go to outer space, leaving everything behind, just because it feels like that’s what she’s supposed to do to be happy. In space she solves the problems of a planet, figures out her cat isn’t really a cat, travels through space with Lila Cheney (from New Mutants (X-Men family) fame), a mutant who can teleport and sings for a living across the universe and then recaptures an old foe who sends a bunch of rats her way.
The best part of this compilation of comics to me was probably the appearance of Rocket Raccoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy. The rest was ok, but it was missing something to make this superhero as great as everybody says she is… but maybe I’m just getting older (and more boring) and I need more adult content in my comic books… could be that, too.
cheers!
