Book Review: Serafina and the Twisted Staff

The first thing I have to say about this series is how awesome the covers are. Seriously, I think the main reason I picked it up in the first place was because of the cover.

Well, just like the first installment, I picked up book two in the Serafina series by Robert Beatty because of the pretty cover (and also because it was $2) when I saw it at my school’s book fair. The teachers at my school usually get a few dollars to spend in the book fairs and this is how I’ve come to own the first and second book of this series.

I must tell you, it was really hard for me to read it at first. I couldn’t understand why. I’d read about half the book and it was just… well, boring. These are books with magic and shifters and action… just, not the first half of the second book, I guess.

There was too much description, too much information about what the character was doing and thinking. It was just too much. I’m not saying it’s wrong, but maybe it’s not for me. Whenever characters talk the story flows easier, don’t you think? It’s like the dialogue in itself it’s an action. Well, for many, many pages no one spoke in Serafina and the Twisted Staff.

It is a middle-grade book, so I did figure out what was happening before the great reveal. The last seventy pages or so are pretty great. Perhaps this is the reason why I would read the third book. Besides, I’ve visited Biltmore Estate and it’s kind of cool to read a story that takes place there.

I give it four solid stars, and I only take one star because of the tedious beginning. I’m so glad it was worth it at the end.

Cheers!
