Book Review: Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles #2)

The sequel to Cinder introduces a new character, Scarlet. The second installment to the Lunar Chronicles was just as great as the first. I got the book and read it in a week, which is unlike me (I usually read one book a month).

It reminded me of what I felt like when I discovered The Selection series. Although their genres as different, I couldn’t put it down either.

I can tell The Lunar Chronicles is a well-planned series of books by Marissa Meyer. Just like the first book is based on Cinderella, the second is based on Little Red Riding Hood. Loosely based.

*⚠️ Warning: If you haven’t read Cinder I suggest you stop reading now because I’m about to write some spoilers *

Cinder left us when the title character is imprisoned with a chance to escape. When she does we meet a new character (and one of my favorites), Cromwell Thorne. Thorne is a bit like Han Solo (in many ways), and he’s just funny and a pleasure to read. I can tell he’s not the one for Cinder, but their chemistry is still amazing.

While Cinder’s adventure happens in China (now known as the Commonwealth), our new character Scarlet is in France. Scarlet meets Wolf, and together they set off on an adventure to try to find Scarlet’s missing grandmother.

Each pair works independently until they come together, having much in common, while the Lunar queen, Levana, and her minions, keep being mean and hateful (Umbridge, anyone?)

Scarlet is a fast-paced series with great characters and a hateful villain. I am really enjoying this series and I predict it will be the best I’ll read this year. I totally recommend it. I’m already half-way through the third book as I am writing this blog post and I can tell you it gets even better.

Although a little predictable overall, it’s just the way I like it and I can’t wait for the happily-ever-after that I hope will come at the end of the series.

Cheers!
