Book Review: The Hazel Wood
I finished The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert today and was so glad I did.
I confess this book wasn’t really for me.
The writing made me lose my focus very often. I don’t know, there was something about the prose that didn’t get me interested enough to pay attention. It was weird.
The story was a little original, but the writing made it confusing and surreal. I didn’t enjoy most of the book because it was unclear what was happening, why or how. Yes, how. I guess the secret of the Hazel Wood and the world it held wasn’t what I was expected at all. Not only that, it was dark and depressing. Who would want to read those stories? I couldn’t even get through the last fairy tale in the epilogue. I didn’t see the point of any of them. There was no message, nothing to look forward to. I think they were grimmer than the Hans Christian Andersen stories (the really sad ones).
I don’t know. Maybe some of you will enjoy it more than I did. But I certainly wouldn’t want to go back to The Hazel Wood.
Cheers!
